It’s not the usual scenario to have your teenage romance (perhaps first and most emotional) and it’s dramatic break-up plastered all over the internet for everyone to see. But not for the Selena, whose rise to fame from Disney Star to popstar sensation was somewhat shadowed by dating a certain Canadian; so how does a young girl cope with that? “I’ve been dating. I’ve been having the best time. But I don’t trust anybody, so dating can only be fun if I know I’m going to have fun.”
According to Instagram, Selena Gomez currently has 78.2 followers (and rapidly rising by the minute) which makes the singer the most followed person on the social media platform. With great power comes great responsibility right? And Selena sure feels it.
Gomez is one of few from a generation of Disney stars who became famous before growing up to figure themselves out. That’s got to be a tough one going through puberty and becoming a woman with the whole world watching. It’s bad enough with your mum pestering you; let alone the whole of the public world. With that, Selena has grown up thick skinned; although shared her frustration that her fame was tainted by too much interest in her dating status: “I would try to promote something that I loved, and the entire interview would be about my personal life. I would leave a room feeling defeated, feeling embarrassed, but I would always make sure to put that smile on my face because I wasn’t going to let them get to me.”
Selena has taken her fame into her own hands and now perseveres to be known for the person she really is: “I finally just wanted to go for it. I wanted to do things that I knew were going to be me. I don’t want people to look at me as someone who is just this celebrity person.”
