7 Hair Styling Mistakes You Should Avoid

January 19, 2022

Bad hairstyling habits are a primary cause of bad hair days and unhealthy hair. Often these are caused by minor errors that you can avoid by paying extra attention to your hair care routine. Here are seven hairstyling mistakes you should avoid to get those good hair days back every day!

1.    Skipping your haircuts

Getting your hair trimmed regularly is an essential part of your hair care routine so you can get rid of damaged hair and split ends. This allows your hair to be healthier and makes styling it more manageable. For the best results make sure you find a great salon to book your appointments with, professional services from specialists like Therapy Hair Studio.

2.    Using too much heat

Avoid using too much heat on your hair, which will only make it brittle and dry, causing it to break more easily. Stick to low or medium heat settings on your hair appliances and prioritize using models that heat up quickly. It is also best to opt for hair styling tools with safety features such as buying a blow dryer with an overheat cutout.

3.    Applying too much hair product

Adhere to the less is more rule when applying hair products before your styling routines. It is recommended that you only use a shot glass of mousse and a nickel-size amount of styling cream and serum. You should also remember to match your styling products to your hair texture for the best results. Most importantly, never apply hair products to dry hair, with the only exception being when using heat protection sprays.

4.    Washing your hair in hot water

Over-washing your hair and using hot water will dry it out and strip away the moisture that makes it healthy, leading to hair breakage. Use warm water when washing your hair and wash it less frequently.

5.    Failing to section your hair

Concentrate on one section of your hair at a go by splitting your hair into different layers. This will ensure you never work too much hair at a go and risk overheating or ignoring some sections. If you are in a hurry, simply split your hair into three horizontal layers and take most of your time styling the front and cheating a little at the back.

6.    Using the wrong size brush

Consider the right brush size in relation to your hair length, texture, and style. It is best to use medium to large brushes for longer hair as they make it easier to create loose, straight, natural waves and smooth styles. On the other hand, small brushes are best for shorter and fine hair.

7.    Ignoring your roots

Have more control over your hair by paying more attention to your roots by:

  • Regularly treat your roots to save your ends and make your hair look thicker.
  • Keeping your blow dryer at least seven to eight inches away from your roots
  • Using scalp oil and serum as frequently as you wash your hair
  • Avoid pulling too hard on your hair while styling it to avoid causing strain on your scalp and roots.
