Does beauty care play a key role in your daily life? If so, you aren’t alone – it does for many of us. But if it seems like looking good comes at a high financial price, don’t worry. It can actually be easy – and affordable – to keep up our beauty regime with a few simple changes.
Why not follow our simple beauty tips to start saving money now?
Don’t wash your hair too much
While you may have been taught otherwise, most experts agree that washing your hair everyday can actually do more harm than good as it can strip it of its natural oils. It’s likely to have a particularly damaging effect if your shampoo contains harsh chemicals like sulphate (used to create lather). And of course, using it too often could eat into your bank account.
Specialists typically advise to wash hair every 2-3 days, though this may vary depending on your hair type. If you currently shampoo every day your hair could actually look greasier than normal when you make the switch to fewer washes per week. There are some great dry hair shampoos on the market, so if you feel your roots look greasy a quick spray will give you a couple more days of your style.
But don’t worry, your hair will soon become used to this new regime, leaving you with both more time and money.
Ditch your make-up wipes
As much as many of us love to wear make-up, taking it off is usually less enjoyable – especially if we’re using wipes. Despite what their name suggests, wet wipes can leave our skin feeling massively dry, and are usually filled with chemicals. Even worse, they tend to be costly and very bad for the environment, I have never used wipes.
One very economical cleansing option is coconut oil. Once you’ve found a big tub of the stuff, all you need to do is massage a small amount of it onto your skin, before rinsing it off thoroughly with a warm flannel. Your skin will feel very plump and nourished and you will need less moisturiser and maybe skip using one if you have oily skin, it’s crucial to use additive-free, pure, extra virgin raw coconut oil.
Be sparing with your foundation
True, foundation has many benefits – but do we really need to use lots of it? Very often, the answer is no. If we apply too much to our skin, we risk creating an overdone, “cakey” look, this just ages you and doesn’t allow the natural you to show through your make-up.
Try using a bit less foundation by mixing it with your moisturiser, you can do this on the back of your hand before applying, you will create a very natural glow and sheen to your skin. If you need concealer apply a tiny amount with a small brush, this will help it blend into your skin and you won’t squeeze an excess of it from the tube.
Switch to these tactics, and you’ll be able to keep your make-up supply going for longer, cutting your outgoings as a result.
Create a beauty budget
Do you currently follow a beauty budget? If not, how about creating one? It offers an easy way to monitor where your money’s going, leaving you with enough to stay looking your best at all times.
To get started, you’ll need to list all your outgoings, and then weigh them against your current bank balance. Of course, it’s vital to prioritise essential purchases first – food, bills, etc – but so long as you have enough left over in your budget, you can incorporate beauty products into it.
If you’ve followed our previous top tips, you’ll likely find that your beauty costs have reduced massively since your last shop.
