I was really curious to see how Guy Ritchie would make a musical version of Aladdin, we have all been wondering if he could cut out the swearing and deliver us wholesome and lovable Disney characters and I think he did it really well. You can all decide for yourselves, it was released this weekend in the UK.
Naomi Scott who plays Princess Jasmine is the star of the film and with a modern twist on the classic story she is given a stronger female storyline and is a feisty opiniated girl. She is a gorgeous looking girl and has a beautiful voice, she is a shining star in the making. Her powerful song ‘Speechless’ gives an idea of what we dealing with, as the Royal family seeks its new ruler and just wants to marry her off, she’s only a woman who couldn’t possibly make any important decisions. The original story does still take place with orphaned street urchin Aladdin played by Mena Massoud falling for Princess Jasmine after a chance encounter in the market one day. His status clearly means he is not an eligible suitor for the princess so he needs to find a way to change that. The film really does go up a gear once we meet Will Smith playing the Genie of the lamp, even though he does look a bit too much of a pumped up body builder, especially against the tiny Aladdin. He gets a new love interest, a twist on his storyline too.
Once Aladdin finds the magic lamp with a wise-cracking, wish-granting Genie. the game is on to woo the princess and marry her, so they can all live happily ever after, it is Disney of course. I went with my niece and nephew and we all loved it, visually all the sets and CGI are stunning, it is a colourful, magical and entertaining treat. Will Smith is lots of fun and he may not be Robin Williams, but he plays the Genie in his own charasmatic, playful and very cool way. The spectacular dance sequences reminded me of the extragance of The Great Gatsby by Baz Lurhmann. Really fun and entertaining, 4 gold stars from us.
Watch Aladdin on the big screen to get the best visual experience. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized cinema geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will transport fans into the action like no other movie-going environment can
