The former style director at W Magazine, Edward Enninful, has just been appointed editor-in-chief of British Vogue, succeeding Alexandra Shulman, who resigned in January 2017 after 25 years at the helm of the title.
Enninful will be the first male to edit British Vogue in the magazine’s 100-year history, and will officially begin his role this August.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Edward Enninful, OBE, as Editor of British Vogue …” said Jonathan Newhouse, chairman and chief executive of Condé Nast International in a statement. “Edward is one of the most talented and accomplished fashion editors in the world.”
Enninful joined W Magazine back in 2011, where he worked hard to boost ad pages by 16 per cent in 2012, the biggest year-over-year gain among fashion titles. He was also the mind behind Vogue Italia’s “Black Issue”, an issue so successful that Condé Nast had to go back and print an extra 40,000 copies!
He has been a contributing editor to both American Vogue and Vogue Italia throughout his career, and definitely knows the inner workings of what makes Vogue, Vogue. Ghanaian-born and London-raised, Enninful emerged into the fashion world when style scout Simon Foxton discovered a 16-year-old Enninful on the Tube. His first official appointment was a role as i-D magazine’s fashion director, at just age 18.
Enninful was awarded the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at the British Fashion Awards in 2014, followed by an OBE in 2016 for services to diversity in the fashion industry. The new Editor in Chief news has been greeted with praise from the fashion community, in which he is well liked and widely respected. Best of luck to Edward in his new position!
