As of this upcoming September, Diana Vreeland will become the first editorial recipient of a plaque on the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Vreeland, for her contributions to the fashion industry. Vreeland shaped the way we see fashion, as well as women in fashion today.
A former editor for US Vogue, Vreeland is the 19th to be recognised, following in the footsteps (quite literally) of Grace Kelly, Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford and Donatella Versace.
Vreeland’s son Tim will be in attendance at the unveiling of the plaque, which will take place just before the release of the much-anticipated fashion documentary, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel, on the 21st.
The film, which was produced and directed by Vreeland’s grandsons’ wife Lisa, details the admirable career of Vreeland herself and how she came to be the iconic figure we know her to be today. Both an intimiate portrait and a celebration of one of the 20th century’s most influential women – an enduring icon whose influence changed the face of fashion, beauty, art, publishing and culture. The sotry of Vreeland illustrates the evolution of women into roles of power and prominence throughout the 20th century, and travels through some of the century’s greatest historical and cultural eras, including Paris’ Belle Epoque, New York in the roaring twenties, and London in the swinging sixties. It also spans such historical events as the great wars, the flights of Lindbergh, the romance of Wallis and Windsor, the Kennedy inauguration, and the freewheeling spirit of the 1960’s youthquake, and the advent of countless fashion revolutions from the bikini to the blue jean.
Featuring a whole host of famous fashion faces including Ali McGraw, Anjelica Huston, Anna Sui, Manolo Blahnik, Lauren Hutton, Diana von Furstenberg, Joel Schumacher, David Bailey and Calvin Klein, the film is incredibly funny, touching and sartorially epic.
A screening will take place as part of the Utterly Elegant event at the London Victoria and Albert museum – as a tribute to British splendor and style.
