The Magnificent Seven, a remake of a beloved 1960’s western, focuses on the the journey of seven unlikely comrades as they fight regain the town of Rose Creek for its residents and defeat a greedy businessman searching for gold.
The film opens with Bartholemew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) and his henchmen rolling into the small farming community of Rose Creek, declaring the land theirs to mine. When they were met with opposition, Bogue’s henchmen opened gunfire on the naysayers, killing many including Emma Cullen’s (Haley Bennett) husband, Matthew. Thirsty for revenge, Emma recruits bounty hunter Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington) to lead the charge against Bogue and reclaim the valley.
Chisolm recruits an eclectic group of gunslingers from different corners of the southwest to form the crew that leads the residents of Rose Creek, training them for the impending fight against Bogue’s men. The seven, including outlaw Josh Faraday (Chris Pratt), veteran Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), and expelled Comanche Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier) formed an unlikely friendship that extended past the alliance of fighting for profit.
Male leads Washington and Pratt stood out as brilliant in their roles, supplemented by striking camera work and an amazing score by James Horner and Simon Franglen. The film left me gripping the edge of my seat, laughing at bits and crying at others—leaving the cinema breathless.
