I have had a lot of queries about liners, and which-one-goes-with-what-lipstick questions in my time.. And the answer is well, there isn’t just one lipstick to go with one lip liner. It really depends on what kind of look you’re going for. Be experimental! There are loads of lip liner colours that’ll blend beautifully with just that one lipstick – and vise versa.
I think the generally-thought thing to do is to perfectly match it to the colour of your lipstick. And that works. If you want dense colour right up to the line, and to have that blunt, defined shape against your skin – then this is a really great option. Especially with bright or bold colours. Nothing better than a red lip that’s perfectly sculpted with a matching liner.
It just adds that real clean-cut definition, and you can obviously play with the shape of your lips too, lips can be successfully plumped up to add a bit more volume (don’t get me started on the whole Kylie Jenner lip thing but you get what I mean..let’s just say moderation is key, lets keep realistic here people).
Personally, a nude lip is my go-to lip colour on a daily basis, as I like to accentuate my eyes. So I’m just using this as the example for today, and also because I have come across a lot of people who find it hard to find the perfect nude – and just going from my experience, I think a lot of the time it’s because they don’t wear a liner with it. They want super-nude, without it looking too wishy washy, or that ‘dead’ look as a lot of people quote..
Get a liner on it! That allows you to wear a nude that may look too pale when worn on its own – but giving it definition, and bringing it away from just looking like foundation all over your lips. And you have that lovely nude pop in the centre of your lips.
The trick is to blend liners into your lipstick, and not leaving it just as a line around the lips (way too 90’s). Bring and blend it in, more so in the corners of your mouth, and leaving that centre to pop out. Liners can of course blended all over the lip, with the lipstick over the top, but that will change the colour of your lipstick but you will get a more even colour all over.. So have a play, see what you like.
I wanted to show how different lip liners used with one nude matte lipstick – I went for quite a light nude, just to show how you can transform it into many different looks, but still keeping within the nude lip category!

The first photo on the top left is to show the lipstick with no liner. The rest is a little self-explanatory. Using different liners with the same lippy!
I have used all MAC Cosmetics products. The lipstick is Myth, and the five liners are as follows; Oak, Stripdown, In Anticipation, Stone, and Chestnut.

TIP: Be light-handed with dark liners like Chestnut with such light lipsticks like Myth. But once you get the knack of it, it can work really beautifully.
