Make Your Bedroom more zen

August 11, 2019

Excessive clutter is bad news. Not only does it look dreadful, but it’ll also contribute to stress, tidy house = tidy mind. Clearing space is especially importantin the bedroom, which is meant to be the part of the home where you’re able to unwind and relax.

In order to take maximum advantage of the space available in your bedroom, you’ll need to think carefully about how you approach storage. Go for the right fitted solution, and you could end up with twice or even three times as much space as available as you previously thought.

Here, let’s consider some creative storage solutions that’ll not only provide that extra space, but do so in a way that looks gorgeous.

Recessed Shelving

If you have space available within your walls, then why not take advantage of it? The next time you’re making structural changes to your bedroom, throwing up new stud walls or tearing down old ones, you might consider making recessed shelving an integral part of your plans? This works especially well if you happen to have a chimney breast running through the centre of your bedroom; you can put up plasterboard on either side and have shelving running through the gaps.

Under-bed Storage

The space under your bed makes an excellent place to store items out of sight (and out of mind). So why not make sure that you’re making the best possible use of that space? You can buy bases with built-in drawers to do this job for you, or you can go for a more ambitious over-bed solution from Hammonds.

On the other hand, if you have a child’s room with a set of bunk beds, then there even more opportunities for extra cupboard space in and around the beds themselves. If you want to be really ambitious, you might make both beds part of a recess, along with other recessed cupboards, drawers and shelves along the bottom and sides. Just be sure that your plans will be easily adapted once the kids have grown out of their beds.

Behind-door storage

One often-neglected opportunity to store extra items comes in the form of behind-door storage. This tends to be associated with kitchen cupboards, where hanging racks allow for lots of spices and herbs to be attached. But it also works with bedroom and cupboard interiors, where you might keep scarves, hats, shoelaces and umbrellas on neat little organised racks.

Fitted Wardrobes

Fitted wardrobes will make the most of the available space in a way that their mass-produced equivalents can’t rival. The options are endlessly flexible, and will conform to awkwardly-shaped spaces. Decide in advance how much space you’ll need for hanging clothes, and then design the rest of the space around it. If you’ve got a bedroom set just beneath a sloped roof, then you’ll find few better solutions!
