An excellent British cast of Rachel Weisz, Timothy Spall and Tom Wilkinson, DENIAL is based on the book Denial: Holocaust History on Trial by Deborah E. Lipstadt. This is a fascinating piece of recent history that I was so interested to see, the film gives an emotional account of such an important story. Weisz, with her strong Queen’s accent, steps effortlessly into this role and plays this character with the perfect mix of strength and passion. Really recommend this one to see when it is out in the UK on 27th Jan 2017.
Lipstadt was a big name and a bit of a bad ass throughout the 90’s and 00’s. Other than an author, she is a historian and in 1994, she was appointed by President Bill Clinton himself to the United Stated Holocaust Memorial Council, where she served two terms.
The film looks at Deborah E. Lipstadt’s legal battle for historical truth against David Irving (Timothy Spall) – “one of the most dangerous spokespersons for Holocaust denial”– who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier.
Lipstadt then goes to England to seek justice where the legal system, in cases of libel, the burden of proof is on the defendant, therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team led by Richard Rampton (Tom Wilkinson), to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred.
Watch how Lipstadt’s gripping book comes to life on the big screen and how English actress, Rachel Weisz steps into the role.
