The Toronto International Film Festival, one of the movie industry’s biggest and most prestigious festivals, kicks off in just a little over a month. We’ve got the scoop on everything you need to know about the glitz and glam packed ten-day festival, which has historically served as a sort of preview for what films will win big come awards season.
The TIFF will open on September 4 with The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. Downey Jr. plays Hank Palmer, a lawyer brought back to his hometown for his mother’s funeral only to find his estranged father Joseph (Duvall) has been accused of murder.

Hank ends up defending his father in court against a prosecutor (Billy Bob Thornton) determined to put Joseph behind bars. The film, which also stars Vera Farmiga, Leighton Meester and Vincent D’Onofrio, marks the producing debut of Team Downey, the production company formed between the superstar actor and his wife Susan Downey. The Judge will be released in the U.K. on October 24.
Also getting the red carpet gala treatment at TIFF is Foxcatcher, which is already garnering a lot of awards buzz for stars Channing Tatum and Steve Carell. Foxcatcher tells the true tale of a former Olympic wrestler (Tatum) who, along with his brother (Mark Ruffalo), begins a poisonous and fateful friendship with billionaire sponsor John Du Pont (Carell). Foxcatcher hits U.K. theaters on January 9, 2015.
Earlier this month we took at look at the trailer for This Is Where I Leave You, starring Tina Fey, Jason Bateman Jane Fonda. Now we know that the film will get a gala presentation at TIFF, on a yet-to-be-announced date. This star-studden film depicts the adult children of a dysfunctional family brought back under one roof in the wake of their father’s death.
