Out this Friday, crime thriller Triple 9 takes on big action with an even bigger star-studded ensemble to show the world is not a black and white place. We got to the inside scoop on what the stars of the film had to say about it when they visited London and why they all joined because of the director John Hillcoat…
This past week we were lucky enough to see quite a selection from the all-star cast at the UK press conference. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Aaron Paul, Anthony Mackie, Kate Winslet, and director John Hillcoat discussed how their new film Triple 9 pulls together bank heists, corrupt cops, Russian mafias, and drug dramas into a high action, high intensity film that shows how just about everyone has blood on their hands.
Kate Winslet‘s character Irina Valslov was a powerful presence in the film as a ruthless Russian mob wife with her own plots for revenge and power, quite the change from her romantic drama. She divulged during the press conference that this character was a particular challenge because she found it very hard to relate to her merciless character. Kate also talked about how she thought her hair, makeup, and costume really helped her add another dimension Irina. Her statement ensembles throughout the movie depict a women whose come into wealth and doesn’t quite know how to dress the part. The large hair, garish nails, and fully matching ensembles perfectly pull together Kate’s Russian mafia look.
Colour was a big influence for director John Hillcoat’s vision of Triple 9. During the press conference, John said he wanted to stray away as hard as he could from the association between cops and the overused color blue. Instead, he went with warmer ambers and red with everything from the police car lights to outfits, to the locations where the cops meet to contribute his vision of roles never set in stone.
In order to make sure everyone involved in the project understood his vision, John made “look book” with color schemes, images that inspired his vision, and anything that would help the characters develop in the way he wanted. The cast said that this were invaluable, with Kate Winslet saying “I wish every project I worked on did this“. This is one of the many reasons all the actors within Triple 9 signed onto this film. As you’ll be able to see in the full conference, the creativity and the careful planning done by Hillcoat is what sold this star-studded cast on the film.
