the TV Baftas 2014 took to London on one of the hottest evenings of the year so far. It finally felt like summer. You might think that this would prompt a flurry of pastel gowns among the red carpet event’s attendees, a host of floating silk creations, strappy sandals from the latest lines, glistening jewels to match. But this year’s lot seemed to shirk the sun and the bluer than blue sky in favour of outfits more suited to an autumnal do.
That’s not to say the creations weren’t stunning, though at BATD we have to admit to being a tad disappointed at the lack of real jaw-dropping dresses. We’re keeping our eyes trained on Cannes for that, we still can’t get over Blake Lively’s first appearance in Chanel (see it in all its glory here).
But here are our pick of the best midnight coloured outfits at the TV BAFTAs 2014. Our favourite of the night? Naomi Campbell. She matched her thunderous reputation with a beautiful stormy coloured dress that showed just enough lean, toned, gleaming skin to prove she’s still well and truly got it, and had a high enough neck and sufficiently long length to imbibe her overall look with the class and sophistication that she has always embraced.

Next up? Sophie Ellis Bextor. Though her dress in all its sequined and embellished glory was naturally fabulous, her real triumph was her hair and makeup. A thick Heidi braid suited her heart shaped face to perfection, whilst the deep smokey eye meant the look was more vampy, less cutesy. Errol Douglas tells us how to get the same hair style here.

And we can always trust Helena Bonham Carter to throw something decidedly more colourful into the mix. We’re obviously not talking about actual colour. Ms Bonham Carter always, always opts for black, and this time, rather predictably, encased her in the distinctively beautiful style of the one and only Vivienne Westwood. But Helena’s sparkling sunnies were perhaps the only nod to the beautiful weather of the whole night. Dominic West even jokingly donned them at one point.

Jodie Whitakker, newly brunette and loving it, graced the red carpet in her beautifully contoured black dress that showed off her slimline figure. Panels of sleek leather accented the outfit, with the leather sash lying across her collar bone making her look slightly more daring.
