By George! It’s that day again. St. George’s Day is a cause of celebration for the land of the English ever since its beginning in 1222. This year there will be feasting, of course, but the party doesn’t stop at that.
Thanks to the Patron Saint the 23rd April is recognized as a time to fly the flag and have some fun. Beyond showing your patriotism and toasting to St. George how about making some extra plans in 2013? Although this is an unofficial bank holiday its popularity has recently heightened.
That being said, Fortnum and Mason is offering up a tasteful evening for celebrators only The menu appropriately features quintessentially English offerings on platters with dishes such as Green & Pleasant Land; Asparagus, Pea and Mint Soup and St George’s Mushroom Tart served with Red King Edward Potatoes, Watercress and Horseradish. All courses are served with wine to wash it down.
At Temple Church in Temple Court hear the works of Shakespeare come to life as the actor Simon Russell Beale accompanies The Aurora Orchestra and Choristers of The Church in an operatic show. Afterwards it is possible to dine in Middle Temple Hall, where Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ was first performed. It is Shakespeare’s date of birth and death, you know.
The City pub called Lamb Tavern at Leadenhall Market apparently commemorates St. George’s day on trend with red and white decor, music, costumes, competitions, and Morris dancing. There’s no doubt a night spent here will also include a range of English ales.
So, wear your best red and white attire and celebrate your patriotic hearts out.
