Last week I was in New York. It has been a while since I knew what was hot and what was not. I do know that going into Newark is more pleasant than JFK and that the Asian vegetarian option is the best Virgin Atlantic can muster.
It had actually been a lovely flight. The flight attendants sporting their new Vivienne Westwood uniforms. The men in particular looked exquisite in their Vivienne cut suits. They were all in good moods and the flight was old school fun.
I like to take an early flight to New York. I find it helps with jet lag and helps immerse you into the city. I had a busy few days and for me the best way to arm myself is a trip to get good hair.
I had no idea how good the Angelo David salon really was. It’s just near Grand Central Station. It is upstairs off the street so you get the impression you are going to a tucked away hideaway, yet Angelo himself is hardly hidden. He’s always on TV working miracles.
It’s a very special salon which specialises in thin hair, a hair category I belong to. There are state of the art hair extensions with real hair and hair loss solutions, but Angelo David is a salon that can transform any hair.
You can have a consultation for couture hair, discuss thinning, balding, whatever. I just wanted a volumising blow dry. I got care, attention, beautiful products and a wonderful result.
I had such confidence in the salon, I also needed eyebrow attention. I wondered could they do the same for thinning eyebrows. Mine have never recovered from bad plucking in my youth. One of them has a bald spot and they are too blonde.
The make-up artist was utterly transformative. She knew instantly what to do with shape and colour. I would say it’s the single most subtle, yet dramatic tweak that’s ever happened to my face.
She was charming and alluring and an artist. I love the fact that Angelo David is dedicated to find solutions to people with naturally thin hair and those who suffer from the stress of hair loss.
Apparently female hair loss after the age of 25 is an upcoming big problem because most of us have colour treated our hair from an early age, used random damaging styling products and any kind of hormonal imbalance can cause unexpected hair loss.
The solutions are not just extensions, although they do offer custom made hair pieces, wigs and extensions. They offer hair fillers to add thickness where it’s needed and a hair detox is an all natural supplement designed to address hair thinning and customised hair treatments to halt hair loss in both men and women.
He has his own brand of volumising shampoo and conditioner, a conditioner that is so light it whispers smoothness to hair without making it look like a lank curtain of limp follicles which conditioner can do to thin hair.
I bought some hair powder that when dusted lightly in the scalp can be used to uplift hair into a super volumised look. I also got a magic brush. It looks like a Mason and Pearson but it’s a mix of nylon and natural boar bristle. It is small, easily fits in my handbag and my tiny hand luggage bag and its combination of bristles does something magical. They seem to instantly smooth and condition hair yet with the gentleness that’s needed to avoid hair breaks or split ends.
So with my wonderful blow dry, and best ever brows, I felt equipped to handle whoever was coming at me that week.
