After big classics like Les Miserables and The King’s Speech, director Tom Hooper has his latest creation; The Danish Girl. The timing for this film is obvious, or better yet perfect; with the transgender experience being very much out in the open.
Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander and Amber Heard all star in the film adaptation of author David Ebershoff’s novel about landscape painter Einar Wegener who becomes Lili Elbe – and was one of the first people ever to receive gender reassignment surgery. This story takes place during the early 1930’s in Copenhagen – an era when society branded such aspirations as a mental disorder.
Could this have been one of Eddie Redmayne’s most challenging roles? “One of the most interesting things for me was my first day on the set as Lili Elbe and the gaze of the crew members – being looked at and being judged, it really made me nervous” Redmayne, 33, told the Daily News. He even goes on to describe that even he felt conscious he might not have been ‘pretty enough’ when wearing his full face of makeup.
We think he looks great and even more so an incredible actor and Hooper has chosen the perfect person for this role. The trailer has definitely tugged at our heartstrings, and we can’t wait to see this one…
